There is something magical about the Fall season. Come September, I find myself itching to craft and create. Along with this season, I also find myself wanting to give. And October is the perfect month for giving, via a little BOO’ing.
If you aren’t familiar with how BOO’ing works, don’t worry! I didn’t know it was a thing until we moved to Hawaii, three years ago. What you do, is create a special Halloween themed gift for your neighbors, then secretly deliver it. I get giddy thinking about, because it’s always so much fun to run and hide after ringing their doorbell!
The BOO’ing has already commenced in my neighborhood, but this year, I wanted to take the surprises up a notch, by providing gifts for the four-legged friends as well. Over the summer, we had a slew of new neighbors move in, most of which had furry companions. While the human neighbors were all welcomed, most of their pets were not.
To get my BOO kits started, I made a trip to Walmart, to pick up all of the essentials. On the list were:
- Mason jars
- Orange spray paint
- American Greetings® Halloween stickers
- PEDIGREE® MARROBONE™ Real Beef Flavor Treats
- PEDIGREE® DENTASTIX™ Fresh Treats
- CESAR® SAVORY DELIGHTS® ROTISSERIE CHICKEN FLAVOR WITH BACON & CHEESE
- American Greetings® gift bags
The first step in creating the BOO-tiful gifts was to take the American Greetings® Halloween stickers and place them randomly around the exterior of the jar. You’ll be spray painting over the stickers to create peek through areas on the jar, so keep that in mind and make sure the stickers are stuck on good! The paint will actually make it easier to peel them up.
The next step, is to take your jars outside, and spray them open-end down with 1-2 thin and even coats of orange spray paint. Allow at least 20 minutes for drying in between each coat, and before returning inside to remove the stickers.
Once your jars are good and dry, you can start removing the stickers. I used vinyl paw print cut outs, on my jar as well, so that the recipients would know that these were doggy-friendly gifts.
Your next step will be to fill the jars up with your dry treats. I put the PEDIGREE® MARROBONE™ Real Beef Flavor Treats on the bottom, then the PEDIGREE® DENTASTIX™ Fresh Treats on top, and sealed each jar.
Each jar then went into an American Greetings® gift bags with a side of CESAR® SAVORY DELIGHTS® ROTISSERIE CHICKEN FLAVOR WITH BACON & CHEESE. I printed out a card with BOO instructions, from the BooItForward page on Walmart.com, and tucked that into each gift bag, so that everyone knows how to pass the BOO forward!
Finally, I wandered the neighborhood, around dusk (to avoid being seen) and dropped each gift off at the door step of a neighbor with a dog. The doorbell was rung, and I ran like heck. I’m kinda crazy in the fact that I can’t help but laugh uncontrollably, as I run away. I don’t think I was caught though. Luckily, none of my neighbors read my blog either.
I’m hoping that this simple (and inexpensive gesture) will encourage more doggy play dates within our community. I know Caesar is a giant compared to many dogs, but my big boy needs love too!
